BACKYARD - CLEAN LINES & AN EVER GREEN LAWN

We are pretty proud of the before and after photos from this project. When the client approached us last spring their back yard was quite an unusable mess. A recent addition to the house left a backyard of mud...or what we like to call a 'blank canvas'. To make matters worse the soil / clay sub-base of the backyard contained an incredible amount of ground water, which made even walking across the yard quite difficult. This problem was amplified by the sump pump, which quite regularly pumped a generous amount of water into the backyard.

The solution we came up with was to incorporate a large (4-5' deep!) french drain along the back of the property which we tied the sump pump into. As a failsafe, put a catch basin in the french drain to monitor water levels and allow a second sump pump to drain the french drain in the event the system fills up (which hasn't happened yet!). We then excavated 12-14" for the patio and synthetic turf area, and treated the sub base with portland cement to dry it out enough for us to build a solid 'A' gravel base on.
